Reformed Church As a whole

As an overview of the church, The Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) was planted through the mission enterprise of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa. The DRC was a product of the Protestant Reformed movement well established in the 1500s. The people who became the catalysts in introducing the new paradigm of Reformation were Martin Luther, John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, among others. The new movement had a wide impact on parts of Europe, and its most immediate influence was felt in Switzerland. It was through the clear vision and leadership of John Calvin which led to the shaping of Geneva as a hub of the Reformed community. From Geneva the influence of Calvin reached the Netherlands. Since then the movement has been growing. The church of Calvin in Geneva became a model for all the Calvinist churches. The DRC was modelled on the church of Calvin, which was then exported by the missionaries to Zimbabwe.

In Zimbabwe on the 9th September 1891 the DRC through the missionary work of nine evangelists, planted the Shona Reformed Church. Later the name was changed to African Reformed Church. After Zimbabwe got its independence in 1980, the name was changed to Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ). RCZ was born at Morgenster Mission in Masvingo which is south of Zimbabwe. The Reformed faith is centred on the Bible and believer’s personal relationship with God through Christ. Reformation stresses on divine grace and justification alone by faith.
